Print speed is critically important when buying a printer or all-in-one. But how do you compare print speeds when different manufacturers measure in different ways? Now you can. Much like the "MPG" ratings on new cars, there's now a new industry standard for measuring print speed, which allows for an "apples-to-apples" comparison between different printer models and brands. The International Organization for Standardization (widely known as ISO) developed this industry approved and internationally accepted standard, specifically for ink jet printers and all-in-ones. It measures "out of the box" (default) print speeds using "real world" printing scenarios, so you can be sure you're getting a product that performs at the speed you need.

†What is ISO ppm?
ISO ppm is based on the new international standard for measuring print speed. Black and color print speeds are determined in default, single-side mode, in accordance with ISO/ IEC 24734. Actual print times will vary based on system configuration, software, and page complexity. See www.epson.com/printspeed for details, including complete ISO reports.
- Fastest in its class; 50% faster than the competition printing black text in default, single-side mode, in accordance with ISO/IEC 24734. Compared to ink jet all-in-ones priced at $199 or less, as of September 2009, based on independent testing.
- Get about two times more prints per cartridge compared with our 126 Black ink cartridge.
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n certified; level of performance subject to the range of the router being used. Visit www.wi-fi.org/files/11nbasics_glossary.pdf for more information.
- Compared to the best-selling monochrome and color multifunction laser printers available for $499 or less as of January 1, 2009. Actual power savings will vary by product model and usage.

By Kay Hayes
Physical Features
Right out of the box, there are a few nice features to this printer - as well as a couple of not so nice ones. First, the document feeder on top cleverly disappears when you flip it closed to make a continuous and easily dusted surface, plus it looks sleek. Second, the angle of the control panel is easily adjustable with a quick pull of the concealed release handle. Third, there are convenient indentations on the bottom sides of the printer for picking it up and carrying it (a small but thoughtful finger saving feature). Finally, it ships with 4 full ink cartridges. I've purchased printers in the past that provided enough ink to test the printer, but that was about it. Having to shelling out another fifty bucks or more for ink when you first buy a printer is a bit unsavory to me. The lack of a door/cover for the memory card bay and the fact that paper tray has a dust collecting cutout in front are the only two areas lacking in the physical design of this printer.
Setup
From unpacking to printing a test page over my wireless network took about 40 minutes. The process included installing and priming the ink (which takes a few minutes), installing the drivers, connecting via USB (to make setting up the wireless connection faster - but you can use the printer keyboard if you have prefer), and then connecting wirelessly. Connecting wirelessly was so easy, at first I worried how secure my network was. All I needed to do was confirm my SSID. Since I was installing from a laptop using the same network, the software took care of getting all the needed information from the PC. I didn't even have to enter a WEP key.
Bonus Software
Installing the bonus software for photo editing and scanning, as well as updating the drivers, took about another 30 minutes. Registration was quick because the software filled in many of the blanks like name, email, state, zip, and serial number of the printer (not sure how I feel about where/how it got my personal information since I have no other Epson products).
Of note, the first attempt at the driver updates via the wireless connection failed. I had to plug in the USB cable again and then update. Then, when I got up the next morning, the scanner was not found by the computer so I used the driver update utility again and, for the second time, it found updated drivers for the printer and the scanner. It also popped up a window this time warning to install the printer driver first. After installing the printer driver, rebooting, and then installing the scanner driver, all was well. Of note, the second driver installation went well over the wireless connection. My guess is that the failed first attempt caused the scanner driver to be installed first.
Overall
This is a fast printer and scanner. The scanner warm up is very brief. This brief warm up allows the printer to turn off the bulb soon after the scan competes, thus saving power. Scanning documents using the ADF worked flawlessly. Scanning into color PDF files took a couple of minutes per page, including the file conversion. Printing pages of Word documents was lightening fast in both color and black and white. Making a color copy on the standard quality setting using the ADF took about 26 seconds including the scanner warm up. Photo printing speed was good and the quality, for a multifunction unit, was good as well.
The scanner software is basic and lacks some of the features of my Canon MP830 such as the ability to scan several pictures at a time into multiple .jpg files (in essence one pass of the scanner creates several pictures). The picture printing software is very easy to use and also very basic. There is not much editing capability besides positioning, color correction and adding a frame.
The price of the ink seems a bit high for the black, nearly twice the price of my Canon MP830. Epson's claim is that it lasts up to twice as long, so time will tell if it is worth the price. The CMY color pack is about the same price.
There is one issue that is almost worthy of losing a star. Twice, when I launched the "Epson Scan Settings" program it was unable to communicate with the scanner. I had to hit the refresh button to get it to appear. Also, when I tried to launch "Epson Scan" it would not launch until I hit refresh in the "Epson Scan Settings" program (they are two separate programs). That is too quirky for my tastes and now I am faced with wasting time searching for solutions - or putting up with it until a future update fixes it.
The price of this Epson is less than half of what I paid for my Canon, but it lacks duplex printing with the automatic document feeder. In exchange you get really fast printing wirelessly. Overall, this is a quality printer at a really reasonable price.

By Dennis A. Amith (kndy)
As many others have done wonderful reviews on the Epson WorkForce 630 Color Inkjet All-In-One, I'm going to approach this review much differently in which I will be comparing the Epson WorkForce 630 ($79.99) vs. 635 (which goes for $132).
When it comes to size, aesthetics even down to the box packaging (aside from the single final digit and the 630 has French text included with the English on the packaging) but there are two major differences which may matter to you or may not (and I'll go into this in the section titled differences), these two printers look very alike and share similar features.
So, should you go for the Epson WorkForce 630 or the Epson WorkForce 635?

II. INSTALLATION
Installation was quite easy. Make sure to follow instructions of how to install the printer cartridge as there are two plastic pieces. You only have to remove the one in yellow, do not remove the clear plastic. When you open the top section of the printer, the cartridge holder goes to the middle and you can easily snap all four cartridges. The next step for those using wireless is to select your wireless connection, enter your code and if it's all good, you can then install the CD. Installing was easy and on my iMac, it only took around 10 or less minutes to install everything. It's important to note that I used a custom install not manual and bypassed all third-party software and just installed the printer contents only and instruction guide only.
III. TESTS
PRINTING:
The first test was printing documents and wow! Printing was quick (especially compared to the Epson 440 I reviewed a few months ago). In fact, right after that, I printed my magazine interview article from Adobe InDesign to the printer with hi-res graphics and high quality printing and the printer was just printing quickly. I was amazed how full-color pages were just printing with ease. Colors also looked exactly how my layout looked.
So, I did a third test. This time, full color printing with images with darker colors to check on how deep the ink gets and if the claim of how dry the ink is, is true at all. I did two types of pages, one with heavy black and it printed quickly. The page was slightly damp but no ink run off, nor did it get on my fingers.
Fourth test and I printed a digital camera picture on photo paper and it looked very good, actually extremely good for an InkJet.
Final test for printing was using the automatic document feeder on the top of the printer which you can place 30 letter or A4 Sized sheets or 10 legal-sized sheets on the top. There is a slide edge and it works perfectly. I had no problems printing at all.
***********NOW, THIS IS MAJOR DIFFERENCE FROM THE 630 vs. the 635***************
A. TWO-SIDED PRINTING
The 635 can do two-siding printing. In fact, the 630 and 635 printer look exactly the same with the only difference is that the Epson WorkForce 635 has the 2-sided printing button, the 630 is missing that button under the LCD. So, the big question is how important is 2-Side Printing for you?
Most people don't utilize two-sided printing but I sure did back in college for spiral bounded presentation projects. And in my former corporate job, I used the function a lot for presentations. For my business, it helps to use it for events and test brochures. Especially if you are a graphic designer and are doing two-sided projects. No need for cutting and gluing both sides together.
But it all comes down to if you need this feature or not.
B. CARTRIDGE CAPACITY
The 635 has more capacity for Black and Color ink. The 635 can print 385 b/w pages and 755 color pages. The 630 can only print 245 pages and 340 color pages. So, the difference is quite substantial. If you print a lot of color, the 635 will save you more money in the long run. But if you don't and you only print in black and white, the 630 may be all that you need.
COPYING:
Copying is easy as you can select the quantity, the quality and it copies and prints quickly.
SCANNING:
Unfortunately, while the printer is wireless, scanning is not and you need to use the scanner, you need to have it connected to the USB or you can have a flash card or USB Flash Drive in the front and save the image on that card. While it works well for scanning, for the work I do, I still prefer having a flat bed scanner for larger objects but many people should find the scanner to be quite adequate.
FAXING:
Connect it to a phone line and you have a fax machine without having to worry about toner. Very convenient to use and easy to setup.
IV. JUDGMENT CALL:
I absolutely love this printer! One because of it's price and also two things that I always look for in a printer which are:
a) Bottom feeding paper and not top loading (top loading will often eat paper up and messup things inside your printer as opposed to bottom loading)
b) The rear of the printer has an access panel to remove jammed paper.
c) It's wireless and allows for USB Flash and Compact flash Cards
And of course, the quality and speed that these 630 editions are known for. This is a wonderful all-in-one printer but as you look into the price on Amazon, there is nearly a $60-$70 difference between both the 630 vs. the 635.
Both are exact machines with the exception that the 635 does two-sided printing. It's a very convenient feature and for college students or home offices that utilize that capability, it's definitely worth it! But if you notice that you have no need for two-sided printing, then definitely go for the cheaper 630 version.
And the other difference is the 635 has more cartridge capacity for ink, especially if you are printing color. 755 pages for the 635 and 340 pages for the color ink cartridge and because this takes four cartridges, in the long run, you will probably save more money getting the 635 over the 630 (that is if you print a lot of documents in color).
Overall, the 630 is a wonderful budget printer. The main capabilities that its brother (635) has, the Epson WorkForce 630 has except the two-sided printing and the 635 has bigger ink cartridges.
But if you are on a budget and you just need the basic all-in-one capabilities, the 630 is excellent.
Excellent price! Excellent quality! This printer is highly recommended!

By C. A. Bayko
Just bought this today and set it up. Unfortunately didn't have time to take advantage of the great Amazon Price as I needed a work replacement ASAP. I want to let everyone know that this comes with a complete set of XL print Cartridges; which can be as much as $80, for the set; B&W and Color; so it's a no brainer good buy. Haven't had time to evaluiate color printing; but the set up yeah, takes time, but everything works perfectly when done. The fax is super easy and efficient. Quality wise, yeah! there are better items; but you have to start to move into the $300.00 range! The Salesman at Office Depot, told me he had the 600 model; and never had a problem! Testimonials folks, that why we come to Amazon.
